The Art of Pilgrimage

Time & Location

Jun 25, 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Saranam Retreat Center, Montrose, WV 26283, USA

About The Event

First get inspired by examples

Starting at 10:00 a.m., we will discuss the universal concept of pilgrimage and look at examples of Buddhist, Christian and Islamic art meant to inspire pilgrims on their journey. We will also examine how contemporary artists use the theme of pilgrimage in their work.

Then it’s your turn

In the second part of the workshop, we will walk mindfully on the beautiful grounds of Saranam, making note of especially sacred places. Combining journaling and simple artmaking, we will create Art/Travel journals out of our impressions. Please bring a small (around 5x8 inches) sketchbook or journal with unlined paper. Other art supplies will be provided. If you have your own supplies, you are welcome to bring them. No artistic experience is necessary, but an open mind is a must!

About the leader: Inspired by the writings of Japanese poet Basho, artist Claudia Giannini has been creating visual art out of her pilgrimage experiences since 2012. Claudia Giannini received her MFA from West Virginia University, with specialization in printmaking and photography and has exhibited her work widely. Her 38-year career in the museum field provided extensive experience with both western and Asian art. She has made pilgrimages to Viet Nam and Japan, and walked the Camino de Santiago in Spain and Portugal. She created series of artworks based on each of these pilgrim experiences.
