Artists Retreat

Artist retreats offer an opportunity for artists of all levels to spend one or more days together working on their art, in a zen-inspired setting free of outside distractions.  You do not have to be a trained artist to join us. If you have never attended one of our Artist Retreats, know that we hold them in an informal style, to encourage exploration, sharing and support no matter what one's experience level or medium of creativity. There is no formal teaching but much sharing takes place.

We set up tables and chairs around the retreat center, inside and out, depending on the weather, and participants choose their own spot according to their needs and preferences. Bring your own materials and current project(s) to work on. Your time during the retreat is your own and Saranam offers a variety of places to enjoy while here. You can work on your project at a table in the house, on the screened porch, or out in the fields and woods. Whenever you wish, you can go for a ramble, take a nap, enjoy the view from the veranda, or meditate in the zendo.

SPECIAL EVENT THIS WEEKEND: On the evening of Saturday, Oct 28, we will also celebrate the season by offering an optional ceremony to honor our ancestors (more on this later).

 LODGING: You are also invited to stay overnight at Saranam. We offer comfortable dormatory space and a few private rooms (first come, first served). We request that you bring your own linens to help us keep our overhead as low as possible. We charge only $25 per night. 

FOOD: We usually share food potluck style, so bring something to share.  Some people prefer to eat only their own food and that is fine too.

NOTE: On Sunday morning, from 9-11, the Saranam sangha gathers for a formal zazen meditation in the zendo. You would be welcome to join should you wish to. We will be happy to help you learn enough to participate appropriately. 

COST: We ask for a $15/day donation to Saranam to cover heat, electricity, water and general upkeep.  If you plan to spend the night the charge increases to $25/day.
